Friday: Pete Brown’s Beery Book Club

Award winning author, broadcaster, blogger and ‘Bill Bryson of Beer’, Pete Brown, returns to Lewes OctoberFeast for a unique beer tasting event. Books are brilliant, beer is awesome; what could be better than bringing them together? Pete will be matching some of his favourite books with appropriate and sometimes surprising tipples and The Snowdrop kitchen crew will be on hand with suitable sustenance.

Saturday: The GREAT Scotch Egg Tournament

Do you or someone you know make the best Scotch Eggs in the world? The tournament is open to all-comers, professional and amateur cooks alike. There are three categories: Traditional, Experimental and Vegetarian, and you may enter as many as you like. Entry is free, but please register in advance so that your egg recipe can be perfectly matched by a highly qualified team of experts to its own special beer. Bring along three scotch eggs to be cooked to order. We request that you use only free-range eggs and meat.

Saturday: Beer & Food Matching with Melissa Cole

International beer judge, writer, educator, broadcaster, bon vivante and ale connoisseur Melissa Cole will demonstrate the principals of matching beers with perfect culinary accompaniments. If you think food goes best with wine, Melissa will delight and dazzle your tastebuds, surprise your senses and make your olfactory organs go “Wow!’ with her wild and wonderful taste combinations.

Sunday: Jazz At The Snowdrop and a BBQ Send Off

It’s time for a barbecue at The Snowdrop where the kitchen crew will be roasting some fine cuts on the open coals to a delightful musical accompaniment. Performer, recording artist and songwriter Imogen Ryall brings her soothing vocals to the garden (under canvas) for a perfect end to a busy week. As the day winds down, pop inside for the Fruitful Sound System spinning some chilled vinyl on the decks. Mmm Nice!

1: Brasserie D’Orval’s ‘Orval’

According to Mark, this one changed his perception of beer forever. It’s a Belgian Trappist brew – and those who know their beer stuff will know what that means. Says Mark: ‘complex yet easy drinking.’ Not something you’d always associate with the style.

2: Anchor’s Old Foghorn and Small Beer

A classic double header – from both ends of the strength spectrum, with one made from the remnants of the other. According to Mark, this is the brewery which ‘paved the way for everyone else.’ So they just had to be here on this list. Legends. Find out more…

1: Camden Town Brewery’s Hells

Bit of a treat this one. It’s a real lager, from a brand new London brewery that’s dedicated to the German style. Mark’s view: “the best ‘proper’ style lager beer made in the UK.” Go get it.

2: Ordell’s IPA

Says Mark: “one of the best craft breweries in the US, founded by Doug Odell who was driven to brew beers inspired by the UK tradition with a twist.” The result is a legendary beer that all us Brits now want to better.

3: Schlenkerla’s Marzen

Do you like smoked ham and cheese? Yes, that’s right. Do you like smoked ham and cheese? Smoked ham and cheese. Good, because that’s what this incredible ale tastes of, amongst other things (including our beloved Frazzles crisps). Check what else Mark has to say. Bet you want one now.

1: Thornbridge’s Kipling. Described by event curator Mark Tranter of @DarkStarBrewCo as anything but a one trick pony. And one that friend and fellow brewer Kelly Ryan (@EpicBeerKel) created to prove that New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops can deliver something incredibly complex, as well as powerful.

2: Brasserie Dupont’s Saison. A beer in which, according to Mark, every rule gets thrown out of the window – to create something pieced together but ultimately dazzling and extremely gluggable.

3: Worthington’s White Shield. A ‘proper IPA’ in Mark’s words. And it is. More importantly it’s available in cask here at the #GreatBeerExpo. A treat for those of us only able to grab it in bottles until now. Brewed by UK legend Steve Wellington, we suggest you get yours poured early doors.
